Dave Kewitt was born in New York City in 1951. He grew up on the Jersey shore. Mr, Kewitt attende Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia where he earned a B,A, in Art. He moved to Wyoming in 1979.
The things that excite me today are much the same as they were when I was a kid. I was first drawn in by the images I saw thumbing my grandmother's collection of art books and visiting her studio. It was a magical place.
I was in awe when I had the chance to see thecollections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the other great museums in and around NYC, and seeing those very paintings in front of me.
There was a voice inside of me that said, "I want to do that"; along with the attitude...."I can do that"!
I was fed by a continual stream of bread crumbs consisting of gian pads of newspaper, pencils, charcoal, watercolors, oils, brushes, as equally important, encouragement.
I still love to visit museums, galleries and studios.
I have always loved to be outsideand witness nature and its extremes, whether it is bracing against the wind and spray of the oceancrashing ashore during a Nor'easter, or following a thread of water up the side of a mountain to a series of beaver ponds or topping out some ridge to take in the veiw beyond or to the wide open spaces of the west.
I rediscovered my oild a few years ago after receiving the gift of a pochade box and the promise that I would use it.
the truth of it is there is an endless supply of inspiration no matter where I am and it doesn't hurt to live in beautiful Wyoming.
I love the path I am following now, painting en plein air, facing all the challenges that presents, still listening to that inner voice.
